Every year, Shi’a Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad. This religious observance called Ashura occurs on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the islamic calendar. During 40 days Shi’a mourn the death of their third Imam and his family, killed in Kerbala in 680 AD. These photographies were taken in Tehran’s Grand Bazar on the Day of Arbaeen, the commemoration putting an end to this mourning period.
