In September 2009 I embarked on a journey around the Black Sea. The objective was to capture the great variety of cultures and identities of this region tucked between Europe and Asia. On my travel map appeared exciting names: Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and Crimea. I had little knowledge of the region’s history, except that it had long been a battleground for ideological confrontations and had undergone multiple political variations; communism being the most recent and influential of them all.
Black Sea Symphony I is the first sequence of a long-term project. In 2011, I returned to the Black Sea to complete the loop.
